About studying Hindi:

Hindi was originally the common language of North India. Following widespread migration, it is now found across the globe. Even in Japan, it’s easy to find all things Indian. And while a common view holds that “learning Hindi is easy because it’s a lot like Japanese,” it is in fact not that simple. A complex Indo-European language, Hindi has many similar features to Japanese that are nevertheless not the same, posing a more nuanced challenge than would an entirely dissimilar language. The more one delves into these nuances, the deeper one’s understanding becomes of this fascinating language. Furthermore, as with any foreign language, studying Hindi allows us to reflect back on our native tongue and relativize our viewpoint on our culture. With new language and new study come new values and an international outlook. So let’s have fun!
