Principles and Goals

The principle aim of Studies in Language and Society is to conduct education and research on the languages and cultures of different regions of the world. This is achieved by applying both theory and practice to extend the excellent education and research policies of the Department of Language and Society of Osaka University of Foreign Studies.
The Regional Language and Culture Course includes the Asia/Africa Language and Culture Course (Chinese, Korean, Mongolian, Indonesian, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese, Hindu, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Swahili) and the Europe/America Language and Culture Course (Russian, Hungarian, German, Danish, Swedish, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese). In both courses, students will acquire advanced skills in the language they study, and learn to see things from a variety of viewpoints based on a wide and deep knowledge obtained through the undergraduate programs. This will be achieved by focusing on certain specialized areas, such as linguistics, literature, history and sociology.
The Highly-Specialized Professional Course includes the Recurrent Course for English Teachers and the Recurrent Course for Chinese Teachers, and aims to play an important role in the improvement of the quality of English and Chinese education at the junior high and high school levels.
